The conservative distaste for democracy

Sadly No! wonders why conservatives, while touting democracy in almost every sentence, don't seem to understand the concept. It certainly does not involve military coups, a stifling of the press and curfews. It also doesn't include wiretapping your citizens, invading sovereign nations and torturing your prisoners. It's curious that the Wall Street Journal has supported these characteristics so often in the past in its promotion of Bush policies in the guise of the quest for democracy. That doesn't seem to apply to the Honduras. Why? Because Hugo Chavez doesn't like the coup. Forget logic. What Chavez doesn't like is OK with the US. Because, in the black and white world of conservatives, Chavez is a US enemy and everything he supports must be bad. Including a coup and stifling of the press.

Deep thought. Honduras had democratically-elected Leftist government. The Left must be defeated no matter the cost. Not much different than the conservative view of the Iran elections. The Wall Street Journal is merely speaking in code, representing the popular conservative view that Ahmadinejad is actually the better choice than Mousavi. There's muted applause among the right for the authoritarian, theocratic leadership of Khamenei. Because having an idiot in charge of your enemy's country is a lot easier to rail against than a seeming moderate. And there's one thing the modern US conservative needs more than anything and that is something to hate.
