American diplomats threatened by Canadian sitcoms

I think this lead-off paragraph in a New York Times article is more tongue-in-cheek than anything, but it does demonstrate the sensitivity of American officials to not being treated as the rulers of the earth. Canadians are often accused of being defensive and of having an 'inferiority complex', but as Kady noted, these officials seem to have a 'superiority complex'.
WASHINGTON — In early 2008, American diplomats stationed in Ottawa turned on their television sets and were aghast: there was an “onslaught” of Canadian shows depicting “nefarious American officials carrying out equally nefarious deeds in Canada,” from planning to bomb Quebec to stealing Canadian water supplies.
You can hardly blame the Americans. The right wing is fighting a battle over a socialist president who doesn't share their appreciation for 'American exceptionalism". (Perhaps that's because US excpetionalism is a distant thing of the past, brought down by decades of decadent Republican rule, most recently at the deathly hands of George Bush.)

But when Canadians scoff at the American bravado, that's worse than socialism - that's outright Canadianism! Expect troops of right-wing US bloggers massing at our border as I type.

The right wingers in the US hate, hate, hate criticism. Just ask Wonkette, who takes the NYT snark a step further:
Shut up, Canada. Opening your big Canadian mouth only makes you look less cool.
