Obama is in a bind. He's going to lose big no matter which way this turns out. If the tax cuts for the rich succeed in being extended for another two years- it's looking likely - Obama's base will disintegrate. His right-wing critics will be more emboldened to attack and obstruct his efforts to progress the USA into the 21st century. The only people who will support the president after this will be sycophants for whom Obama can do no wrong, moderate Republicans, most journalists and Blue Dogs. Everyone else loses, especially Obama.
If the tax cuts are defeated, his base will be energized, the left-wing press will be cautiously impressed and the middle class will be wondering what the big deal is. The rich of course will be happy but say nothing. The tax cuts will no longer be known as the 'Bush tax cuts for the rich' but will now be 'Obama tax cuts for the rich'.
Most tellingly, his right-wing critics will be more emboldened to attack and obstruct his efforts to progress the USA into the 21st century. He can't win with those people. The deficit will be rocked further out of whack and chances for Obama's re-election will be severely hindered. The Democrats will suffer great losses in 2012 because the economy will continue to decline, more jobs will be lost and most of his base will have abandoned him.
This will not turn out well no matter the outcome, but the latter I fear will sink Obama and the Democrats. 2012 will indeed be the Apocalypse, at least for Democrats, Obama and the American people.
