Sad day. RIP Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet)

Arguably the most original 20th century artist, musician and poet has ceased to exist on a physical plane. He changed the way I viewed and listened and thought. He changed lives. Captain Beefheart was unlike anyone else. He was a giant and he will be missed.

He was also a brilliant video director. (Much as I love Johnny Depp, he stole his modern look from ancient Beefheart (glasses, 'stache and hat.) Even if you don't care for the music, watch the visuals. Black and white with a little colour thrown in ('Ice Cream for Crow'). Beyond brilliance.

One more thing - for those who don't believe in the innocence of the actual 1967 summer of love, witness this bit of reality of Southern Califronia 1967. Nixon? He was still alive. But being alive was still cool. If you want to know what 1967 was really like, look at these photos. That's what I remember. Trepicadious young people without a clue but with a heart bigger than your ass now. And that's big, motherfucker.

You hippie motherfuckers are really something else: even in a eulogy for a genius, you can't help but pat yourselves on the back.

The comment was about Beefheart and he was never a hippie. I don't remember hippies; I remember Beefheart.

But thanks for trying.
