I didn't know Tim Thomas' politics before now but I should have. The Bruins, regarded as NHL's dirtiest team and favourite of HNIC, the eastern media and Conservatives like fugitive Patrick Ross, have in their midst an Obama hater. His name is Tim Thomas. I knew the guy was a whiny douche. I just didn't know how much.
Don Cherry must be so proud.
Thomas, a known fan of conservative talk show host Glenn Beck ...UPDATE: Thomas will post his reasons for not attending on his Facebook page at 6 p.m. EST. I can hardly wait.
UPDATE II: Just to be clear, Tim Thomas has every right to do as he pleases. And I have every right to call him out as an asshole. Turning one's back on a team is not admirable, folks. It's selfish.
UPDATE III: Here's the video of Obama hoisting the Bruins. Notice how Obama calls out Tim Thomas for special recognition. I guess class only goes one way.
UPDATE IV: Here's little Timmy's statement:
"I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.
This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal rew.
Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.
This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic. TT"Uh, Tim did you forget you are on a team? This is some crazy shit. Any resemblance to the writings of the Unabomber are strictly coincidental.
UPDATE V: Due to the number of tweets and emails I have received, most calling me 'idiot' and 'stupid' for my last update or progressives disputing my interpretation, let me elaborate. Thomas is not talking 'freedom' or 'rights', he is talking the language of Glenn Beck and Ayn Rand. That is, we should act as 'individuals' for our own personal good and gain as interpreted by the far right as the meaning of the Constitution and the groundwork laid by the founding fathers. Thomas is not talking about personal freedoms or the elimination of the government role in areas of censorship of the arts or drugs or wars. He is talking about shrinking the government to eliminate the safety net.
People do not refuse to visit the White House because of a non-partisan disagreement with the way the government has been headed virtually since the founding fathers drafted the Constitution. But, as the United States has learned, times change. It is no longer the 18th century. The United States has population unimagined by the drafters. The era of greed and self-propelling ambition has hit a wall. The country has adapted to these changes. People have to share to keep the dream alive. The government must step in to regulate those will take advantage of the rest of the country. Those in need require governmental intervention to survive and to keep the humanity alive.
We all have our own interpretation of 'rights' and 'freedoms'. It is not just financial freedom and the reduction of the government in our lives. I for one would love drugs to be legal. I would love the war rhetoric and budget to be curtailed. I would love censorhip - except for libel and defamation - to be elimininated. But that's not what Tim or Beck are talking about. They are talking about deregulation, no taxes and the destruction of social programs.
Tim Thomas' refusal to visit Obama's White House has nothing to do with 'rights' or 'freedoms'. It has nothing to do with non-partisanship. It is code for something else entirely. Only his conscience, family and friends know why. So, like everyone else I'm projecting here. But by using the language of Glenn Beck, Thomas is speaking the same language deemed too crazy even for Fox News. Sometimes it helps to not read the words themselves. It is more important to read between the words. It's all there in black and gold. To Tim Thomas and Glenn Beck, there is no grey.

Gotta wonder how dude ever survived playing for U of Vermont or in Scandinavia (Finland)...
Thomas' reasoning sounds just fine to me. Both America's primary political parties and their government have been screwed up for a long, long time.
Obviously, Tim's cut from higher-quality cloth than his fellow teammates. Bet he gets a standing ovation from his fellow fundies this Sunday.
I never had any expectations, and Tim managed to get below that.
Mr. Beer N. Hockey - I don't agree. There is nothing in his words about personal freedoms, only the rights of the individual. There's a difference. Ask Ayn Rand.
Keep in mind that Tim gets hit in the head frequently in his line of work.
He also seems to Have a PRobLem with upper Case and Lower case. This is well known to be a Right Wing thing.
Tim is a putz...
Until such a time as I have a beer or two with Tim Thomas I see no reason to piss on him even if he is a randian twit. I find it refreshing to see a professional athlete pee on a President. Compare, if you will, Svend Robinson's pissing on Ronald Reagan when he addressed our country's Parliament, which I enjoyed immensely, with Thomas' snub of Obama. What is good for the goose is good for the gander if you ask me.
