Detroit was a hotbed of searing rock & roll in the late 60's, spawning generations of rockers to this day loyal to the balls-to-the-wall music pioneered by the likes of the Stooges and the MC5. The latter band never gathered the fame or fortune that eventually found the Iggy Pop and the Stooges. But their influence lives on.
Sadly, original bassist for the MC5 Michael Smith succumbed to liver failure yesterday. As the tributes pour, both personal and musical, I like to remember my youth emboldened and enriched by the life-altering wall of sound from the MC5 and how Michael Davis' hard-nosed bass playing propelled music into another hemisphere. He helped change my life for the better, gave me an edgy optimism and many hours of playing air bass in my bedroom.
